Bishop Peak is the most iconic hike in San Luis Obispo, offering stunning views of the city and the surrounding Central Coast. This 3.5-mile trail is a moderate climb to the highest of the “Nine Sisters” volcanic peaks — and on a clear day you can see all the way to the Pacific.
I’ve hiked this trail dozens of times — with my kids, with clients, and solo at sunrise. It never gets old. The Central Coast lifestyle is on full display here: hikers, dogs, families, and some of the most breathtaking views you’ll find anywhere in California.
The trailhead is located on Patricia Drive with free street parking. Arrive early — spots fill fast on weekends, especially summer mornings.
No restrooms at the trailhead. Nearest facilities are at nearby shopping centers on Foothill Blvd.
A shaded start through coastal live oaks before the trail opens to exposed chaparral. Wide and forgiving — great for younger kids and first-timers.
you’re doing it this hike is nice but where is the top?
you made it to the top. take a picture eat a snack enjoy the view and then start back down!
Spin around and see the full Central Coast from the top
Nothing puts the Central Coast in perspective like seeing it from above. Bishop Peak and the surrounding SLO landscape from the drone.
Older kids will love the climb. The lower section is manageable for most children, but the summit scramble is best for kids 8+ who are comfortable on rocks.
Yes, dogs on leash welcome. No water sources on trail — bring at least 1L per dog.
